Pho King 4 is a straightforward Vietnamese restaurant tucked into downtown Davis, offering a solid spot for a casual, no-frills meal centered around classic pho and other Vietnamese staples. With most seating indoors and a handful of tables outside, it fits well for a quick lunch or relaxed dinner, especially on weekdays when the crowd thins out after the lunch rush.

The dining experience leans toward efficient and approachable rather than elaborate. Service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing, making it a comfortable spot for solo diners, students, or small groups looking for a dependable meal. The atmosphere is unpretentious with simple decor, focusing attention on the food rather than ambiance.

On the menu, the pho options are a clear highlight — particularly the beef pho with sliced steak, brisket, and flank, which offers a generous portion of meat for its price. The broth strikes a good balance: richly flavored without being overwhelming. Other dishes like the chicken banh mi showcase crispy, well-seasoned bread with fresh fillings, favored by locals looking for a quick, affordable sandwich. Fresh spring rolls and egg rolls add lighter, textured choices alongside more filling rice and noodle dishes.

Plant-based diners will find thoughtful options such as golden rolls stuffed with tofu and vegetables, as well as tofu spring rolls served with peanut sauce, providing decent variety beyond typical pho highlights. Vietnamese desserts like chè—a sweet mix of beans, jelly, and coconut milk—offer a refreshing finish if you’re looking for something cool and lightly sweet in warmer months.

Best times to visit might be late morning or mid-afternoon on weekdays when seating is easier to find and orders come out quickly. The place tends to be quieter around 2 pm, making it a solid choice for those seeking a calm lunch break or an early afternoon meal. It also draws a student-heavy crowd, reflecting its location close to UC Davis, and the price point fits well into a student budget.

Overall, Pho King 4 serves as a practical, friendly neighborhood stop for those craving traditional Vietnamese comfort food quickly and at reasonable prices. It’s well suited for anyone wanting to enjoy a sizeable bowl of pho, a crispy banh mi, or a simple meal without fuss in a modest, casual setting.

At lunchtime, I ordered the beef pho with steak, brisket, flanks ($13 for small) and dined inside the restaurant. Most seating is indoors but there are also tables outside. My noodles were served quickly within 10 minutes of ordering by friendly staff. The pho had a delightful soup and the amount of meat was generous for the price and portion. The flank was a bit chewy for my tastes, I’d stick with just the brisket or steak next time. I was slightly taken aback by the noodles, as they unfortunately clumped together. Maybe this is just the style of pho in the area, as the noodles were of similar quality to other Vietnamese restaurants nearby. Overall, this is definitely a great local place I will be returning to and trying out more dishes! EDIT: I came back to try the bahn mi ($6.50) and it was delicious, nicely toasted with fresh jalapeños and all the right fixings.

I ordered lunch online and ended with way too much food! The chicken ban mi is very tasty. The roll shatters when you bite into it because it's crispy on the outside. That's a good thing. The egg roll spring rolls were not what I was expecting but they are delicious. Noodles wrapped in lettuce with a strip of fried pork, all wrapped in a soft spring roll wrappers. That in itself is a nice light lunch.

the restaurant was pretty empty - we came around 2pm on a Tuesday, for reference. that meant we got a table immediately and the food didn't take too long to be ready. I ordered the #18 bún bò huế and the thai tea :) the food had a nice amount of spice and was a good size for the price (the same as a large for some of the other dishes). the tea was more on the milky side, which isn't bad, just a matter of preference. I would definitely have the noodles again but I might try a new drink next time.
